John W. Cox was born in Arab Sept. 29, 1920 and attended Marshall County High School and the University Of Alabama. He earned a Masters degree from George Peabody College. He received the Bronze Star and a Presidential Citation for his services during four major battles in World War II. John Cox began the football program at Childersburg in 1947. He would remain at the school for the next 33 years before retiring following the 1979 season. His overall record as a football coach at Childersburg was 189 wins, 126 losses and 14 ties. His first team won five games against teams that had been established for years. In 1956, his Tigers were undefeated, and he was named the Birmingham-Post Heralds Class 2A Coach Of The Year. Cox also coached basketball 13 years with only one losing season and was Childersburgs baseball coach for six years, all of them winning seasons. Cox served as assistant principal at Childersburg High School, while serving as head football coach at the same time during the last twelve years of his career. In 1976, the stadium at Childersburg High School was renamed in his honor. He was named Talladega Countys Coach Of The Year ten times. Cox was inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 1991. Coach Cox passed away February 21, 2002 in Childersburg.
